The 2005 Hyundai Elantra uses a singular serpentine belt to operate all the accessories tensioned with an automatic tensioner. Serpentine belts are grooved for increased friction on the pulleys, resulting in less slippage, especially when they become wet. The pulleys have a corresponding set of grooves that mesh with those of the belt. It is important for all the pulleys to be in perfect alignment or the belt will fray on the edges.
Instructions
- 1
Open the hood and locate the belt tensioner on the passenger side front of the engine.
2Locate the belt routing diagram located on the top of the radiator fan shroud. If its missing, make a drawing for reference when installing the new belt.
3Place the ratcheting end of the ratchet in the square hole in the tensioner arm on the tensioner. Pull the ratchet to rotate the tensioner pulley away from the belt. Remove the belt from under the tensioner.
4Install the new belt according to the belt diagram. Keep some tension on the belt as it's installed so it stays in place. Make sure the grooves mesh on both the belt and pulleys. Move the tensioner away from the belt and place the belt under the tensioner. Relax the tension on the tensioner.
