A radiator crack can arise from numerous causes, such as damage from an impact or metal corrosion. When the crack becomes large enough to leak coolant, repairs are necessary. There are several inexpensive commercial products which can be used to fix a cracked radiator at home, without the need for professional welding or soldering.

Instructions

    1

Remove the fill cap on the coolant tank. Pour in a radiator stop-leak product, following the guidelines printed on the bottle. Top off the coolant level, if necessary, and start the engine after replacing the cap.

    2

Idle the engine for several minutes, giving the coolant a chance to cycle through several times. The stop-leak additive should fill the crack and expand, sealing it off. If the crack continues to leak coolant after the product has had a chance to work, it will be necessary to fill the crack from the outside.

    3

Follow the directions printed on the package of an epoxy putty product designed specifically for use on automotive radiators. Kneed or mix the product, then apply it to the crack. Push the putty deep into the crack and press it flat against the outside of the radiator. Let the epoxy dry for at least six hours, then refill the radiator with coolant and test the repair.
