The 2001 Kia Rio uses disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear. These brakes require disassembly and reassembly in order to facilitate most inspection, repair and replacement tasks. Performing this task may take up to 30 minutes per wheel under ideal conditions. Assembly of the rear drum brakes may take longer than the front disc brakes due to the complexity of the rear drum brake setup.
Instructions
Assembling the Front Disc Brakes
- 1
Mount the brake disc rotor onto the wheel hub. Secure the rotor in place with the lock nut and tighten it with a ratchet and socket.
2Place the caliper over the rotor. Secure the caliper to the steering knuckle by installing and tightening the caliper bolts at the back with a combination wrench.
3Use a brake caliper piston tool to twist the piston into the caliper housing. Apply a small amount of anti-squeal grease to the back of the brake pads and shims. Attach the shims to the brake pads and insert them into the brake caliper.
4Insert the anti-rattle spring and brake pad pins into the caliper. Attach the brake pad retainer over the pins and anti-rattle spring.
5Mount the wheel onto the hub and attach the wheel lugs. Use a torque wrench to tighten the lugs to 65 pound-feet. Remove any vehicle supports used and lower the vehicle.
Assembling the Rear Drum Brakes
- 6
Attach the parking brake operating lever and lever retainer to the brake backing plate. Attach the anti-rattle spring to the brake shoe assembly.
7Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to hook the brake shoe hold-down spring, return spring and pins onto the brake shoes.
8Slide the brake drum over the brake shoes and onto the brake backing plate. Insert the brake drum bearing and washer into the hub. Secure the brake drum with the lock nut and tighten it with a ratchet and socket.
9Mount the wheel onto the hub and attach the wheel lugs. Use a torque wrench to tighten the lugs to 65 pound-feet. Remove any vehicle supports used and lower the vehicle.
