How to Change the Rear Brakes on a 2001 Hyundai Tiburon

The brake assembly in the 2001 Hyundai Tiburon is unique because the hub and bearing are integrated directly into the brake drum. If you&039;re used to replacing brake shoes in other vehicles, it may lead to you thinking that the drum is seized around the hub or wheel studs. Once you get the drum off, the replacement is similar to other drum brakes, although the spring and adjuster arrangement is a bit unusual.

Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels. Raise the car, support it on a pair of jack stands and remove the wheels. There is a jack pad just ahead of the center of the rear bumper.

Pry the cap off the center of the brake drum. Remove the nut underneath. Pull the drum and hub assembly off the axle.

Remove the two large springs that connect the shoes. Pull the shoes apart and remove the adjuster rod that connects the shoes across the top. Set it down carefully so you can reinstall it in the same orientation.

Twist the pin that holds the hold-down spring to the front shoe. Remove the pin, spring and retaining cap. Remove the shoe. There is a lever and spring attached to the shoe. Remove them and transfer them to the replacement shoe.

Remove the pin, spring and cap from the rear shoe. Pull out the shoe. Pry off the C-clip that attaches the parking brake lever to the shoe and attach it to the replacement shoe.

Install the replacement shoes and hold-down springs. Put the adjuster lever in place at the top of the shoes. Attach the two springs. Slide the drum onto the axle and replace the nut. Torque it to 158 ft-lbs. Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Repeat on the other side, lower the car and tighten the lug nuts.
