Peugeot introduced the 307 hybride HDi Diesel, extending its hybrid technology from the earlier prototype the Citroën C4 Hybride HDi.

By combining a 1.6 litre HDi diesel engine with a Diesel Particle Filter System and an electric power train, Peugeot is claiming nearly 70 mpg, a 30% gain compared to the standard HDi model. The vehicle gains 43bhp from the electric motor giving it improved acceleration. The gain in greenhouse gas emissions is around 25%.

The new power train is a parallel hybrid power train, in which the diesel engine is the main power source. The electric engine is connected in parallel to the diesel engine, giving it an assist. The electric engine is powered by a Nickel Metal Hydride battery made up of 240 cells. It is recharged by regenerative braking and by the diesel engine. Peugeot has also implemented a start-stop system which shuts down the diesel engine at up to speeds of 37 mph.

The new Peugeot 307 hybride HDi Diesel was introduced at the British International Motor Show.
