My Brake Lights Won't Turn Off

The brake lights are connected to a switch near the brake pedal, therefore when you step on the pedal, this switches on the lights. The reason why the brake lights won't turn off could be related to the switch jamming or getting stuck.

Turn the ignition on the car to "on." Do not start the engine.

Use a test light -- a piece of equipment used to detect electrical voltage -- to test the wires. Two wires are connected to the brake switch: one to power on and one to power off. Test the first wire using the test light and pressing the brake pedal. If it lights up, then it is fine; if it does not then it needs to be replaced. Make sure the ignition is on.

Test the other wire. If the test light does not light up, then this wire needs replacing. If both wires lit the test light up, then the fuse will need to be checked.

Check the fuse located either under the dashboard or under the hood in a power distribution center. Using the test light, test both sides of the fuse.
