In 1953, Ford changed the names of its F-1 and F-2 trucks to the F-100 and F-250, respectively. It wasn't until 1975 that Ford released the F-150, and even then, the suddenly popular pickup was just a gap-filler between the F-100 and the F-250 models. Little did Ford know that this gap-filling pickup would account for more than one-third of all Ford pickup sales in its debut year. The 2007 F-150 -- introduced 12 years after the F-150 replaced the F-100 -- was three years removed from a redesign that changed the front-end design of the pickup, including the headlights. Adjusting the headlights on the F-150 keeps your vision maximized, with minimal effect on drivers coming from the opposite direction.

Instructions

    1

Park your F-150 on a level surface, facing a flat wall that is at least eight feet wide and about the height of the truck's windshield. Move the truck so that the headlights are about 25 feet from the wall. Open the truck's hood.

    2

Find the 3 mm circle on your truck's headlight lenses -- this is the headlight height reference mark. Measure the distance between the 3 mm circle and the ground with a tape measure -- this is the headlight reference height.

    3

Place an 8-foot-long piece of masking tape across the wall at approximately the same height as the headlight reference height, using a tape measure.

    4

Turn the F-150's ignition to "Acc." Turn the truck's headlights on and set them to the low-beam position.

    5

Tape a headlight-sized piece of cardboard over one of the headlights, using masking tape. Look at the light pattern on wall and find the distinct horizontal edge on the right side of the light. If this edge does not line up with the masking tape line on the wall, the light needs to be adjusted.

    6

Find the adjustment screw on the rear of the headlight assembly -- under the hood. Turn this adjustment screw with a 4 mm combination wrench -- clockwise to raise the light and counterclockwise to lower the light -- to adjust the headlight's height until the horizontal edge of the headlight lines up with the masking tape line.

    7

Remove the cardboard cover from the light on the other side of the F-150. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to adjust the other headlight.

    8

Turn the truck's headlights off, turn the ignition to the "Off" position and close the F-150's hood.
