An oil and filter change on a 2002 Chevy Duramax is a conventional procedure. The oil should be changed every 6,000 miles. The Duramax uses a spin-on canister filter and 10 quarts of diesel oil. Diesel oil is available in several brands. It is good preventative maintenance to also replace the fuel filter and drain the water separator. Changing the fuel filter requires purging it of air.

Instructions

    1

Start the engine and allow it to warm up for 2 minutes. Shut the engine off.

    2

Place the drain pan under the oil pan and remove the drain plug in the oil pan using a wrench. Allow the oil to drain for 10 minutes, replace the drain plug and tighten it snugly. Remove the oil filter on the drivers side rear of the engine using a filter wrench to turn it counterclockwise.

    3

Fill the new oil filter with fresh oil and spread a little on the O-ring. Spin the oil filter on clockwise as tight as possible by hand. Use the oil filter wrench to turn the filter one-quarter turn. Do not tighten it any farther, or it will become very difficult to remove the filter at a later date.

    4

Remove the oil filler cap on the engine. Add 10 quarts of oil. Install the oil filler cap.
