The ninth generation of Ford F-150 trucks debuted in 1992. With an all-new exterior and several interior upgrades, the new F-150 was significantly different from its eighth generation predecessor. Ford offered 1992 F-150 buyers a range of drive train configurations, as well, including seven different transmission options. When preparing to service your F-150 transmission, or if you need to perform repairs, you'll need to identify the transmission in order to ensure that you are purchasing the proper parts. Most auto-parts retailers have transmission identification charts to aid in this process.

Instructions

    1

Write the year and model of your F-150 on a piece of paper with a pen or pencil. Write down whether your truck has a manual or automatic transmission.

    2

Climb underneath the F-150 with a flashlight and the pen and paper.

    3

Examine the pan to see if Ford embossed the transmission type onto the bottom of the pan. Some Ford transmission pans will have "E40D" or "AODE" embossed onto the bottom of the pan, which instantly indicates what transmission your vehicle has. If the pan has no such embossing, move to Step 4.

    4

Draw a likeness of the transmission pan on the paper, noting the length and number of sides the pan has, as well as the number of bolts on each side. This doesn't require a skilled artist, just the ability to draw straight lines in the approximate shape of the transmission pan, as well as circles to denote the pan bolts.

    5

Take your drawing and vehicle information to your local auto repair store, Ford dealer or transmission repair shop. Compare your drawing to the transmission identification chart. Many stores display these charts near the transmission filters and fluids section, but you may need to ask someone at the parts counter to show you the chart if they don't have it displayed.

    6

Write down the type of transmission you have on your paper. Transfer the transmission type to your owner's manual or maintenance book in the F-150's glove box, so that you'll have it for easy reference in the future.
