How to Hook Up the Spark Plug Wires on a 1994 Jeep Cherokee

The original Jeep Cherokee was a modified version of the Jeep Wagoneer. The 1994 Jeep Cherokee featured a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder engine or a 4.0-liter in-line six-cylinder. The 1994 Cherokee came available in two- and four-wheel-drive versions. The 1994 Cherokee plugs are located on the passenger side of the engine. The plugs can be somewhat challenging to remove, depending on how long they have been in the engine. Older plugs tend to take more force to remove than do new plugs.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood of the Cherokee and set the hood prop. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery with a ratchet and socket.

    2

Remove one spark plug boot from a spark plug by twisting it and pulling it upward off of the plug. Inspect the spark plug boot and the spark plug wire all the way back to the ignition coil. If the boot or wires are dry rotted, cracked or torn, replace the wires along with the plugs. Replace the wires by following them from the engine to the ignition coil, and removing each wire individually along with the plugs. Match the length of the old wire with one of the new wires, then install it.

    3

Remove the spark plug from the engine with a ratchet, extension and 5/8-inch spark plug socket. Turn the plug counterclockwise to remove it from the engine. When the plug is loose, detach the ratchet from the extension and socket. Turn the extension to completely remove the plug from the engine.

    4

Set the gap on the new spark plug to 0.035 (in thousandths of an inch), with a spark plug gap tool or a feeler gauge set. Insert the gapped spark plug into the spark plug socket. Install the plug threads into the engine mounting hole. Turn the extension by hand to ensure proper threading. If you get resistance before the plug is completely installed, remove the plug and start threading the plug again by hand. Tighten the plug snug with your hand.

    5

Tighten the plug between 26 and 31 foot-pounds with a torque wrench, the extension, and your spark plug socket. Install the spark plug boot over the tightened plug.

    6

Repeat steps 2 through 6 to complete the replacement of the remaining spark plugs. Install the negative battery cable, and tighten the tie-down nut snug with a ratchet and socket.
