Finding out that your windshield wipers are not working properly can be frustrating during inclement weather. The 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 incorporates a wiper motor with wiper linkage that is integral. Over time, the wiper linkage may break or become bent, or the wiper motor may develop dead spots. This can cause either part to require replacement. The wiper motor and wiper linkage have to be replaced together. Proper alignment of the wiper arms is essential to the correct operation of the arms after the new motor and linkage are installed.

Instructions

    1

Open the Ram's hood. Remove the wiper mounting nuts from the bottom of both wiper arms, using a ratchet and socket. Remove the wiper arms from the truck by hand. Lift the arms away from the windshield, then release the arm latches. Rock the arms back and forth to remove them from the wiper arm pivots.

    2

Remove the four wiper linkage fasteners, using a ratchet and socket. Disconnect the main electrical connector from the wiper motor, using a flat-head screwdriver to release the locking tab if needed. Remove the ground tap electrical connector from the wiper motor by hand. Remove the wiper motor and linkage from the truck.

    3

Install the new wiper motor and linkage. Connect the two electrical connectors to the new motor by hand. Install the four wiper linkage fasteners and tighten them to 72 inch-pounds, using a 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench and socket. Install the wiper cowl over the new motor and linkage and tighten the fasteners snug with the Torx driver.

    4

Go to the driver's compartment of the Ram. Turn the ignition key to the accessories position and turn the wiper switch on, then off. This will cause the motor and linkage to go through an entire cycle, then to the park position. Install the wiper arms onto the parked wiper arm pivots. Test the position of the wiper arms by turning the wiper on, then off. Adjust the wiper arms' position if needed.
