How to Replace the Rear Brake Shoes of a 2005 Nissan Sentra

The 2005 Nissan Sentra is a 4-door sedan with front and rear disc brakes, that is built for comfort and safety. One of the most important safety features on this car is the brake system. If the brakes are grabbing, squealing, or failing to stop, it is time to replace your brakes. Brake replacement is far cheaper than taking the car into a mechanic and usually takes the same amount of time.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts. Loosen each lug nut up to two full rotations using the tire iron. Do not remove the lugs at this time.

    2

Jack up the car. Situate your jack beneath a solid section of the underside of the car. Raise the car enough to fit the jack stand beneath a support strut of the vehicle.

    3

Take off the tires. Finish removing the lug nuts from each of the tires and slide the tire off of the wheel.

    4

Remove the brake caliper setup. The brake caliper setup is the metal housing that sits atop the brake wheel and holds the brake pads. It can be removed by undoing the bolts on it with the socket wrench.

    5

Remove the brake pads. The brake pads will slip out of the caliper setup once it has been removed.

    6

Compress the brake caliper. The brake caliper is the cylindrical piston in the caliper setup. This can be done in one of three ways. You can use your thumb and forefinger to compress the caliper. You can use a c-clamp to compress the caliper. Also, if the caliper will not simply compress (if it has a horizontal groove on it) you will need to use the brake caliper compression tool.

    7

Install the new brake pads. Place the new brake pads into the slots where the old ones were. One boxed set of pads is used for each tire. The two brakes within the box are universal so they may be used for either side of the caliper setup. Make sure that the black brake material is facing inwards, toward each other.

    8

Reattach your housing and tire. Replace the bolt holding the housing on after it is back in place. Then reattach your wheels. Carefully lower your car with the floor jack.
