How to Seal a Leaking Automobile Sunroof

The only way to properly seal a leaking automobile sunroof is to replace the leaking seals. Once you have properly inspected the seals and can see that the sealing itself has deteriorated to the point it needs to be replaced, you're ready to start. The key to replacing your own sunroof sealing is planning the time for the job and performing it correctly by following each step. Check with your local auto parts store for replacement sunroof seal before beginning.

Instructions

    1

Mark the location of the old seal by using a permanent marker at the inner and outer edges of the corners, as well as a dot where the seal starts and ends. This will ensure that you place the new seal in the proper location for a good seal. Remove the old seal by starting where the two ends of the seal meet. Pulling on it gently should get it up, but be careful if it's really deteriorated or you'll have a mess on your hands.

    2

Clean off any remaining glue residue from the old seal using Goo Gone or a similar, non-abrasive adhesive remover. Dry and clean the entire sunroof well very good before continuing to ensure that your new sealant will adhere properly.

    3

Grasp the new sealant and peel back about an inch or two of the paper backing tape. Line it up with the mark you made where the old seal started and press it down. Slowly work your way around the sunroof, peeling back only an inch or two at a time, to ensure proper alignment and grip. Check to ensure that it aligns perfectly with the corner marks so it seals well.

    4

Cut off any excess, ensuring that there isn't a gap and the two end pieces fit snugly together to lock out moisture. You've now completed your own repair and can once again enjoy your sunroof.
