The trouble codes on a 2003 Volkswagen Passat are stored in the vehicles powertrain control module, or PCM. The PCM continuously monitors multiple sensors to ensure that the vehicle is operating properly. When the PCM senses a malfunction with one or more of the vehicles systems, it stores a trouble code in its internal memory and illuminates the service engine light. An automotive scan tool connected to the Passats diagnostic data port is the only tool that can erase the trouble codes from the PCMs memory.

Instructions

    1

Park the vehicle on a flat surface and turn off the engine. Apply the parking brake, then turn the ignition back to the ON or RUN position. Do not restart the engine.

    2

Locate the Passats diagnostic data port. This port is mounted underneath the dashboard, approximately 6 inches behind the point where the steering column meets the leading edge of the lower dashboard cover, just above the pedals.

    3

Plug the scan tools data cable into the diagnostic data port. Power on the scan tool and wait a moment while it boots up.

    4

Select PCM from the scan tools main menu. Choose Codes from the PCM menu. Select Clear All Current and Stored Codes from the Codes menu. Wait a moment while the scan tool clears the codes.

    5

Turn off the scan tool, disconnect it from the vehicle and start the engine. Verify that the check engine light is no longer illuminated.
