You may need to change your brake line but need to know to make one from scratch. This How-To article goes through the steps to guide you to make your own custom-made brake line. Gather your tools and follow the simple steps below and you will have a brake line in no time. Before following the steps below, the old brake line will need to be removed. You will need it to measure your new brake line.

Instructions

    1

Get blank piece of line. These are sold in foot-long increments and have fittings on them.

    2

Make proper length. Take old brake line and straighten it out. Be careful not to break it because you need it to line up with the new line to get the length that you need. Get the old line as straight as possible and line it up with the new line.

    3

Cut the new line a couple of inches long than the old line with a line cutter. Slide the line cutter to the desired cutting point. Hold it down with one finger and then twist the cutting wheel down to the line. Once it is secured around the line, rotate the line cutter around the line until the line is cut all the way through.

    4

Slip fitting off the portion that was cut off and discarded. You can tap it lightly with a hammer to get it all the way off.

    5

Put the fitting on the end where the flare goes. The flex-nut portion should be facing the line on the inside. Slide the fitting on the line and sit aside for a moment.

    6

Get out the flare tool kit. You will be doing a double flare on the line. Take the flaring vice and undo the screw to slide it open.

    7

Fit the brake line into the accurate size portion of the flaring vice. Set the thickness by using the measurement of the thicker part of the dye. Lock on vice and tighten it up to the desire thickness.

    8

Stack the dye on top of the line and let the die seep into the brake line. Take flare driver and slip it on the line on. Make sure to line it up with the corresponding hole on the top of the dye. Take bar and slide it through the driver and tighten it.

    9

Undo the driver and remove the dye. Put the driver back on just like in step 8 but without the dye. This is the second flare of the double flare.
