New York drivers may have one more reason to switch to buying a hybrid car in the near future. Councilman Member Hiram Monserrate (Queens) is proposing they could get free parking for one year.

After receiving a permit, hybrid car owners could park for free at parking meters.

"Obviously in the backdrop of global warming and $4-a-gallon fuel, the question is what we should do as a municipality to consume less," Mr. Monserrate, who represents parts of Queens, said in an interview.

"It might help in a small way to activate new car sales, which I think is good for the economy. And no one can deny that it would be good for car dealers and the workers at the plants," he said.

Which is how Monserrate feels the measure could be paid for.

The Councilman is also proposing a $100 tax credit towards gasoline as well as a separate tax incentive for those who buy hybrid cars.

New York is becoming quite a hotbed for hybrid car incentives. Not only are all the taxi cabs and black cars going hybrid, but the New York Senate has proposed waiving the sales tax on hybrid cars, added plug-in hybrid vehicles to the state fleet, and given solo driver access to the HOV to hybrid car owners.
