How to Install Rear Brake Pads in a 1994 Mustang GT

The 1994 Mustang GT has disc brakes on all wheels for maximum braking performance, as well as added safety. Changing these brake pads when they become worn is important for maintaining this level of performance. Most manufacturers recommend that you change your brake pads every 30,000 to 35,000 miles. The task itself is relatively simple and it can be completed in as little as 30 minutes in ideal conditions.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with a lug wrench, but do not remove the lug nuts from the studs. Lift the rear of the Mustang GT with a floor jack and stabilize the vehicle with jack stands placed underneath. Finish removing the lug nuts and remove the rear wheels to reveal the brake hardware.

    2

Remove the two bolts holding the caliper to its mounting bracket and lift it off of the rotor. Suspend the caliper in mid-air with a bungee cord. You can attach the cord to a coil spring or another part of the Mustang's suspension or bodywork.

    3

Remove the old brake pads from the caliper and remove the retaining clips from pads as well. You'll need to attach these clips to the new pads. Use a brake caliper tool to push the piston back inside of the caliper housing.

    4

Attach the retaining clips to the brake pads and install the brake pads on the caliper mounting bracket. Remove the bungie cord from the caliper and slide the caliper over the brake rotor and pads. Insert and tighten the two retaining bolts into the caliper with a ratchet and socket.

    5

Repeat the procedure for the other rear wheel. Mount the rear wheels to the axle and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground, and then tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench.
