How to Hook Up an Oil Catch Can

Turbocharged engines leak oil as a symptom of blow-by. Blow-by is oil, gasoline and exhaust that leaks past the piston rings because of a pressure buildup inside the engine. Blow-by is not a problem in and of itself, but the sludge coagulates on engine parts. The buildup of oil creates issues for these parts, particularly the inter-cooler. To prevent a the buildup created from blow-by, a mechanic or vehicle may choose to install an oil catch can.

Instructions

    1

Position the jack under the U bolts that fasten the axle to the frame of the vehicle on the side closest to your car's transmission. Jack the vehicle up until the wheel is 6 inches off the ground. Put the jack stands under the frame of the car in case the jack slips. Unhook the negative battery cable from the terminal, then do the same for the positive cable. If you do not do so, you may shock yourself on the starter.

    2

Remove the nuts and bolts that fasten the fender liner to the wheel well with a socket set. To mount the catcher, slide a bolt with a washer through the bolt mounting arm on the can, then through the hole in the frame. Put another washer over the bolt and screw the nut on. Use one of the holes in the frame previously allocated to the fender liner. Mount the catch can to the frame of the vehicle -- in the engine bay, not in the wheel well.

    3

Adjust the position of the mounting arm up or down on the bolt until the barbed nipples on the can are out of the way of the intake manifold. Tighten the nut on the bolt with a wrench and a socket set. Attach the hoses provided by the manufacturer to the two barbed nipples on the can. Simply slide one over each nipple.

    4

Loosen the hose clamp that secures the factory hose to the intake manifold and pull the hose off the intake valve fitting. Slide a hose clamp over the supplied intake hose you attached to the intake nipple on the can. Slide the other end over the intake valve fitting; slide the hose clamp up to the neck of the fitting -- it is covered by the hose from the catch can -- and tighten it down with a screwdriver.

    5

Loosen the hose clam on the exhaust manifold. Remove the hose. Slide a hole clamp over the hose connected to the outflow nipple on the catch can. Connect the hose from the outflow nipple to the exhaust manifold fitting. Slide the clamp up to the neck of the manifold fitting and tighten it with a screwdriver.
