One of the many engine control components on the 1995 Ford Windstar is the mass airflow sensor. The MAF sensor mounts to the air filter box and uses a heated wire to measure the amount of air that is entering the engine by how cool the heated wire becomes. The powertrain control module uses the information from the MAF sensor to adjust the air-fuel ratio. The 1995 Windstar had two engines available, a 3.0-liter and a 3.8-liter, and changing a bad MAF sensor is the same process on both.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Loosen the hose clamp connecting the air cleaner outlet tube the tube between the air filter box and the engine to the mass airflow sensor, using a ratchet and socket. Unplug the tube from the MAF sensor.

    2

Pry upward on the locking tab on the MAF sensors wiring harness with a small flat-head screwdriver and unplug the harness from the MAF sensor.

    3

Remove the four nuts securing the MAF sensor to the air filter box, using a ratchet and socket. Remove the MAF sensor from the air filter box and out of the engine compartment.

Installation

    4

Clean the MAF sensors mating surface on the air filter box with a damp rag. Guide the MAF sensor onto its mounting studs on the air filter box and hand-thread the retaining nuts. Tighten the retaining nuts to 7 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    5

Press the air filter outlet tube onto the MAF sensor and tighten its hose clamp to 2 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    6

Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on the MAF sensor.
