Disassembling the stereo in your 2003 Ford Mustang may prove necessary when performing certain repair procedures to the dashboard or other related components. Base and Deluxe vehicle models featured a single-disc CD player, and upgraded models were equipped with a 460-watt audio system with a six-disc in-dash CD changer. Despite the differences in performance and features, both in-dash units rely on the same removal process.

Instructions

Disassembly

    1

Turn off the Mustang and open the hood.

    2

Disconnect the black negative battery cable from the battery, using a socket and ratchet.

    3

Separate the gear selector trim cover from the center console inside the Mustang, using the plastic pry tool.

    4

Examine the trim bezel that surrounds the stereo head unit and upper vents. Pry along the perimeter of the trim bezel, using the plastic pry tool. Once the trim piece is freed from the dash console, place it on the passenger seat.

    5

Remove the two screws that secure the lower portion of the stereo head unit to the dash console, using a 9/32-inch socket, extension and ratchet.

    6

Slide the stereo unit out of the dash console. Disconnect the harness and antenna connections at the rear of the stereo unit, taking note of the locking tab provisions where applicable.

Reassembly

    7

Reconnect the harness and antenna to the rear of the stereo unit.

    8

Slide the stereo into the dash console.

    9

Secure the stereo to the dash using the 9/32-inch screws, socket, extension and ratchet.

    10

Line up the stereo trim bezel to the dash console. Press the stereo trim bezel in place.

    11

Press the gear selector trim in place.

    12

Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery, using a socket and ratchet.
