How to Mount Step Bars

Mounting step bars on your truck or SUV increases the vehicle's exterior aesthetics as well as functionality. The step bars provide a foothold between the cab floor and the ground which aids in entry and exit. The step bars also protect the body panels from road debris and may upgrade your vehicle's resale value. If you're handy with a wrench and have an hour of spare time, you can mount step bars on your vehicle.

Instructions

Block off the right rear tire with two wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from moving. Lift the left side of the vehicle with the floor jack until it is high enough for you to place two fully extended jack stands under the left frame rail.

Lower the truck or SUV onto the jack stands. Place two more jack stands alongside the left side of the vehicle. Lift the left step bar onto the empty jack stands, with the mounting brackets aimed at the left frame rail.

Slide the mounting bolts through the step bar mounting brackets and into and through the frame, using the factory-drilled mounting holes. Some step bars may have rubber insulators that sit between the bracket and frame rail, so make sure to check the specific instructions for your step bars.

Slide the lock washers and retaining nuts onto the ends of the step bar mounting bolts. Tighten the nuts onto the bolts until the lock washers flatten out.

Lift the left side of the vehicle off the jack stands with the floor jack. Move all the jack stands away from the left side of the vehicle. Lower it to the ground with the floor jack.

Repeat step one through five on the other side of the truck or SUV to install the right step bar.
