The 2003 GMC Envoy came equipped with either the 4.2 liter V-6 or 5.3 liter V-8 engine. Both engine options used a single serpentine belt to drive accessories like the alternator, power steering pump and water pump. The system used a spring-loaded tensioner to keep tension on the belt, while allowing a small amount of slippage to prevent binding. The average home mechanic can replace the belt in the Envoy in less than an hour using common hand tools.

Instructions

    1

Locate the belt-routing diagram on the fan shroud, and make sure it's legible. If not, draw one on a piece of paper.

    2

Rotate the belt tensioner -- located to the left of the water pump pulley -- clockwise using a 3/8-inch breaker bar (on 4.2-liter engines) or a 3/8-inch breaker bar and 15 mm socket (on 5.3-liter engines). Rotate the tensioner to relieve enough tension so you can slip belt off the alternator pulley. Release the tensioner slowly.

    3

Unwrap the belt from the remaining pulleys and remove it from the engine compartment. Check the tensioner and idler pulleys for excessive play or noise when rotated. Replace the pulleys if they are damaged.

    4

Slip the new belt into place around the pulleys according to the belt routing guide found on the air duct in the engine compartment. Use the breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt over the alternator pulley. Check the belt position on all the pulleys to ensure it is properly installed.
