The 1992 Chevy S-10 was offered with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 2.8-liter six-cylinder and a 4.3-liter six-cylinder. Base models of the S-10 had five-speed manual transmissions, but all engines were available with an optional automatic transmission. The belt removal and installation process for each engine varies slightly, but the process is similar and can be completed with common hand tools. Follow the instructions for your engine in the list provided.

Instructions

2.5-liter Belt Replacement

    1

Lift the vehicle hood and secure it with the hood prop rod. Draw the belt routing on a piece of paper for later use.

    2

Place the breaker bar and socket onto the tensioner pulley bolt. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and slide the belt off the alternator pulley. Slowly release the tensioner to its neutral position and remove the belt from the other engine accessories.

    3

Study the sketch made previously and route the belt starting with the crankshaft pulley. For engines without air conditioning or power steering, the belt will route from the crankshaft pulley, over the water pump, under and over the idler pulley and around the alternator pulley. Hold pressure on the belt toward the center of the engine at the tensioner pulley. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and slide the belt over the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the tensioner. On engines with air conditioning the A/C compressor takes the place of the idler pulley described earlier in this step.

    4

On engines with air conditioning and power steering, start the belt routing around the crankshaft pulley, then over the water pump, under the power steering pulley, over the A/C compressor and around the alternator. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and slide the belt over the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the tensioner.

2.8-liter Belt Replacement

    5

Lift the hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Draw the belt routing on a piece of paper for later use. Place the breaker bar and socket onto the tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the tensioner counterclockwise. Slide the belt off the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner to its neutral position. Remove the belt from the other engine accessories.

    6

For engines without power steering or air conditioning, start the belt routing around the AIR pulley on the bottom left side of the engine, then under the crankshaft pulley, over the water pump, around the idler pulley and around the alternator. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and slide the belt over the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the tensioner pulley. If the engine has air conditioning, the A/C compressor takes the place of the idler pulley described previously in this step.

    7

On engines with power steering and air conditioning, start the belt routing around the AIR pulley on the bottom left side of the engine, then under the crankshaft pulley, around the water pump, around the power steering pulley, over the A/C compressor, under the idler pulley and around the alternator. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and slide the belt over the tensioner. Slowly release the tensioner to apply tension to the belt.

4.3-liter Belt Replacement

    8

Lift the vehicle hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Draw a sketch of the belt routing on a piece of paper for later use.

    9

Place the breaker bar and socket onto the tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the tensioner counterclockwise. Slide the belt from around the tensioner pulley and slowly release the tensioner to its normal resting position. Remove the belt from the other engine accessories.

    10

Study the sketch made earlier of the belt routing. Start the belt routing by hanging the belt from the idler pulley on the top left of the engine. Then route the belt under the crankshaft pulley, over the water pump, under the power steering pulley and over the alternator pulley. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and slide the belt under the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the tensioner to apply tension to the belt. If the engine has air conditioning, the A/C compressor will take the place of the idler pulley on the top left of the engine.
