Lincoln rolled the first Continental off the assembly line in 1939, defining luxury cars for the American market. Considered the flagship of the Lincoln line, the Continental ultimately met its demise at the end of the 2002 model year when Lincoln turned to smaller, more sport inspired vehicles to lead them into the future. The 1998 Lincoln offered a vast array of features to make driving more pleasurable. The Lincoln has three mirrors: two on the front door A-pillars and a review mirror mounted on the windshield. In the event a mirror incurs damage, you'll need to replace it.

Instructions

Rearview Mirror

    1

Mark the area where the old mirror mounts to the windshield with a wax pencil or crayon on the outside of the windshield. Work around the edges of the mirror mount --- where it contacts the windshield --- with the razor scraper to cut through the adhesive holding the mirror to the windshield.

    2

Pull the mirror off the inside of the windshield and clean the area where the mirror mounts using a razor scraper and the alcohol swab in the mirror installation kit. Remove old adhesive, film and the pencil or crayon mark completely.

    3

Apply a pea-sized dab of mirror adhesive from the mirror installation kit to the mirror mounting button, located at the base of the mirror where it mounts to the windshield.

    4

Allow the adhesive to cure for one minute, or the time specified on the mirror installation kit packaging, if different. Hold the mirror in place, with the button set inside the mark you made on the outside of the windshield in Step 1, for 1 minute. Do not push too hard on the mirror to avoid cracking the windshield.

    5

Wipe the wax pencil or crayon mark off the outside of the windshield with a rag.

Side-view Mirror

    6

Open the door with the mirror in question and lower the window in that door. Remove the key from the ignition.

    7

Pry the Continental's window switch bezel from the arm rest in door panel using a trim tool. Unplug the switches from the door harness and set the bezel aside. Remove the plastic trim caps on the inner door pull with the trim tool and then extract the bolts behind the trim covers using a socket wrench and 8 mm socket.

    8

Pry the inner door handle bezel out of the door panel with the trim tool and then extract the bolt behind the bezel using the socket wrench and 8 mm socket. Lift the door panel upward to remove it from the Continental's door and expose the mirror mounting nuts. Set the panel aside.

    9

Unplug the mirror remote wiring from the door harness. Remove the nuts holding the mirror to the Continental's A-pillar using a socket wrench and 13 mm socket. Move to the outside of the door and pull the mirror off the door, using care to guide the remote wiring through the door hole.

    10

Slide the new mirror onto the door, making sure the remote wiring goes through the hole in the A-pillar properly and doesn't end up crimped or pinched. Tighten the retaining nuts onto the mirror with the socket and wrench and then plug the mirror remote wiring into the door harness. Reinstall the door panel in reverse of how you removed it.
