Dodge introduced a new category of vehicles -- the minivan -- in 1983 with the release of the Caravan. In 1996, Dodge released the fourth generation of Caravans, giving the van a more aerodynamic appearance and thinner headlights. This generation lasted through the 2000 model year, as Dodge redesigned the Caravan in 2001. The 2000 Caravan had a heater standard and an optional air conditioning available. An electric motor with a fan attached to it -- a blower motor -- circulated the cooled or heated air throughout the cabin. Replacing a failed blower motor on the 2000 Caravan is fairly straightforward once you know where to locate it.
Instructions
- 1
Loosen the negative battery cable, using a combination wrench, and pull the negative battery cable from the battery. Allow the vehicle to set for two minutes with the negative cable disconnected, in order to disable the airbag system.
2Open the Caravan's glove box. Trace the glove box stop cord toward the glove box and locate the cord-retaining clip. Pry the clip away from the glove box, using a flat-head screwdriver. Pivot the glove box downward and pull the glove box from the dashboard.
3Find the blower motor cover -- the semi-circle, plastic cover -- on the lower part of the heater box. Remove the two blower motor cover-retaining screws, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the blower motor cover away from the heater box, exposing the blower motor.
4Press the locking button on the blower motor wiring harness and unplug the vehicle's wiring harness from the blower motor wiring harness. Pull the blower motor wiring grommet from the heater box and pull the wiring harness into the heater box.
5Remove the three blower motor-retaining screws, using a ratchet and socket, and pull the blower motor downward to remove it.
6Guide the new blower motor upward, behind the dashboard, and insert it into the heater box. Tighten the blower motor-retaining screws, using a ratchet and socket. Guide the blower motor wiring through the hole in the heater box and press the rubber grommet into the hole to seal the box.
7Plug the blower motor wiring harness into the vehicle's wiring harness.
8Set the blower motor cover back onto the blower motor access hole, and tighten its retaining screws with a ratchet and socket.
9Insert the tabs on the base of the glove box into the holes on the base of the glove box opening in the dashboard. Pivot the glove box upward, set the glove box stop cord on the side of the glove box and secure the glove box stop cord with its clip. Close the glove box.
10Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it with a combination wrench.
