The steering gear is an essential component of the steering of your 2006 Dodge Caravan. If the steering gear begins to malfunction, you should not try to repair it. Instead, you should replace it as soon as possible. One of the components of the steering gear --- the roll pin --- can only be removed using a specific tool. With the tool, you can remove the roll pin from the steering gear in less than an hour.
Instructions
- 1
Open the hood of the Caravan and twist off the power-steering tank cap. Remove the steering fluid from the tank with a gas/oil siphon pump.
2Lift the Caravan using a jack. Support the front of the vehicle with jack stands.
3Remove the two front tires from the Caravan with a wheel wrench.
4Remove the two nuts from the steering gear, using a socket wrench to loosen the hose lines. Allow any remaining fluid to drain.
5Use a 6831A tool to remove the roll pin from the steering gear. Place the tool onto the steering gear's roll pin. Twist the pin slowly out of the steering gear. Once the roll pin is removed, you can safely remove the steering gear.
