Ball joints are an integral part of a vehicle's suspension, connecting the control arm to the steering knuckle. They wear down over time, resulting in a noticeable change in comfort and steering. So ball joints should be replaced before they break completely and cause an accident. They are difficult to remove with standard tools, but a ball joint press makes the job manageable for the average backyard mechanic. Ball joint presses are available to rent at most automotive stores.

Instructions

    1

Attach the ball joint press to the ball joint with the threaded shaft pointing up. Situate the cup of the ball joint press over the ball joint shaft.

    2

Attach a socket wrench to the threaded shaft on the ball joint press. Rotate the socket wrench clockwise to tighten down the shaft, until the ball joint pops out.

    3

Remove the ball joint from the ball joint press. Turn the socket wrench counterclockwise to unwind the threaded shaft completely.

    4

Place the new ball joint in position. Attach the ball joint press in the same manner as before, except with the tapered shaft pointing down.

    5

Tighten the threaded shaft with a socket wrench, until the top of the ball joint is flush with the top of the control arm. Loosen the threaded shaft. Remove the ball joint press.
