Flaring a brake line is necessary when you're connecting the brake line to another segment or to another component. When the line is flared, it won't slide out of its connector and there won't be a leak. A stainless steel brake line is sturdier than the softer copper tubing that's used in household water lines, so you have to use a specific type of tool to flare the line. With a flaring tool kit, the task is simple.
Instructions
- 1
Find the diameter of the brake line in the holes on a flaring tool clamp.
2Clamp the appropriate hole on the tool over the brake line, leaving about 1/4 inch of the brake line protruding from the top of the clamp.
3Twist the wing nuts into the screw holes on the side of the flaring tool clamp to secure the brake line in the tool.
4Position the flaring tool over the top of the brake line and twist the handle clockwise so the flaring tool pushes into the brake line.
5Twist the handle until the brake line reaches the flare that you want.
6Remove the flaring tool and take the brake line out of the clamp. Now it's ready to be installed on the vehicle.
