On the 1997 Dodge Stratus, the speed sensor reads the rate at which the wheels are turning and sends that information to the car's computer so that the computer can regulate the anti-lock brakes. The speed sensor fits into cogs on the axle inside the wheel well and can be accessed by removing the wheel. The procedures for replacing the speed sensor are slightly different depending on whether the sensor is located in the front or the rear.

Instructions

    1

Raise the wheel that requires a speed sensor replacement. Lower the Stratus onto a jack stand for support. Remove the wheel and locate the speed sensor. On the front wheels, remove the sensor bracket from the steering knuckle and disengage the wiring harness from its grommet on the fender well. On the rear wheels, disengage the wiring harness and remove the grommets on the frame rail and the body.

    2

Remove the bolt holding the sensor head in the axle cogs on a front wheel. On a rear wheel, remove the retaining clips from the sensor head. Remove the sensor from the Stratus.

    3

Install the new speed sensor in position. If you are replacing a front-wheel sensor, apply a thin coat of all-purpose grease to the locating pin of the sensor prior to installation. Reinstall the mounting brackets and the cable harnesses in reverse order of removal. Remount the wheel. Raise the Stratus above the jack stand. Remove the stand and lower the vehicle to the ground.
