How do I Change Disc Brakes on a '92 Ford Ranger?

Replacing the brake pads on the Ford Ranger is not a difficult project. It only takes about 30 minutes to change the brakes on each wheel and you can do it in your driveway. When you are changing the brake pads, make sure you inspect the rotors to check for damage. If there are grooves, nicks, or other damage on the surfaces, they can cause your brake pads to wear out prematurely.

Park the Ranger on a level surface and turn off the key. Open the engine compartment and locate the master brake cylinder on the back firewall. It is on the driver side of the truck. Lift the lid off and siphon about one half of the brake fluid with the turkey baster. Place the fluid in the drain pan to recycle it later.

Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the truck. Raise the Ranger with the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under it near the jacking point and raise it to the frame. Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Take the wheel off the truck.

Remove the caliper bolts with the socket and ratchet. Remove the brake pads from the caliper. Insert the piston tool and tighten it until the caliper piston is inside the housing. Insert new brake pads in the caliper and place it on the mounting bracket. Tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet.

Put the wheel back on the Ranger and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the truck. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Repeat the process on the other wheel.

Check the brake fluid level when the brake job is complete. Add fluid as needed. Pump the brakes several times on the Ranger until the pedal is firm to seat the brake pads on the brake rotors.
