How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a '99 Toyota Corolla

You can save yourself money by making adjustments to the parking brake on your 1999 Toyota Corolla at home. It should only take you about an hour or less to make the adjustment, and all you'll need are a couple of basic tools. You will know it's time to for an adjustment when your car starts to slip a little when you engage the brake after parking your vehicle facing downhill.

Find the parking brake inside your Corolla. It is located between the driver's seat and the front passenger's seat.

Remove the center console that houses the hand brake, using a screwdriver to detach the two screws. Make sure the parking brake is down when you remove the cover.

Look for two rods sticking out of a metal plate. Use the pliers to tighten the two nuts attached to these rods to adjust the parking brake.

Pull up the parking brake. It should click a maximum of nine times. Use the pliers to adjust the nuts again to set the number of clicks you desire. The parking brake is usually set at three or four clicks. Pull up on the brake again to test the adjustment.

Reposition the console cover and tighten the screws with the screwdriver.
