How to Replace Classic Auto Glass

Replacing classic auto glass is just the same as replacing modern auto glass since these cars have some of the basic components of modern cars. The only challenge to replacing auto glass is that you must find a specialty body shop dealer that sells glass specific to your vintage car and model. Replacing side-door glass on a vintage model can be tricky, but with a few tools it can be done without having to visit a body shop.

Wear safety goggles and utility gloves for protection against glass hazards. Apply tarp inside the vehicle to cover exposed upholstery.

Remove the door panel screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide a putty knife or trim tool underneath the edge of the panel to lift the panel up and to remove its four corner fasteners.

Peel back the black strip that secures the weatherproofing shield inside the panel and remove the shield from the door with care. Set aside.

If the glass is still intact, break the glass with a hammer from inside the vehicle. Remove all pieces of broken glass from inside the panel and vacuum smaller glass shards out from inside the panel with a vacuum cleaner.

If necessary, use an adjustable wrench to remove the bolt that secures the window crank inside threshold. Position the new glass inside the window regulator bracket until it cannot be pushed down any farther. Use the adjustable wrench to reattach the window crank nut bolt into place.

Reapply the weatherproofing strip back along the window frame. Apply a thin bead of urethane sealant onto the weatherproofing strip so that it adheres to the car's window pane securely.

Reattach all door panel components that were removed previously. Re-staple the weatherproofing shield in place before reinstalling the door panel.

Secure the panel back into place by reapplying its four fasteners into their slots along the edge of the panel.
