Auto glass removal and repair can be a very important part of vehicle repairs. In some cases, you may have a crack in the windshield, or you may need the glass replaced due to a factory defect. In either case, there are tools that can help in the removal of the windshield.
Induction Tool
One of the key steps in removing a windshield is to break the plastic weld that it has with the urethane on the front of the vehicle. Once the exterior lining is stripped away, it becomes clear that the windshield is bonded to the plastic frame. An induction tool works by heating the glass around the edge of the frame, causing it to break those bonds and to come free. All the technician has to do at that point is to gently push the windshield out from inside to pop it loose from the urethane.
BTB Tool
The BTB tool is used for cutting a windshield out of a vehicle. This can be necessary, especially when there is a warping that doesn't allow the windshield to simply pop free, such as when a car has been in an accident. The BTB tool is like a handheld power saw specifically meant to cut windshield glass. The technician cuts around the edges of the windshield, eventually cutting the glass free so that it can be removed from the vehicle and set aside.
Pneumatic Windshield Tools
Similar to the BTB tool are the pneumatic tools that are meant to cut windshield glass out of the frame. However, unlike the BTB tool, which runs on electricity, the pneumatic windshield tools run on compressed air. This makes them much louder than tools like the BTB, but there's less risk than when dealing with electricity. However, pneumatic tools also have a hose, which gives you the same maneuverability problems as an electric cable would.
