Replacing the ABS speed sensors in a 1997 Mazda Protege is a simple job that should only take a few minutes. Unlike many cars, the front and rear speed sensors are installed the same way. Replacement sensors can be purchased or ordered from most auto-parts stores.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts and lift the wheel with a jack. The jack points are a few inches from the wheels and are marked with a molded line on each side of the point.

    2

Squeeze the tab on the electrical connector and unplug it. The sensor is behind the rotor, near the top. Remove any nuts and bolts holding the cable mounting clips in place that will get in the way of removing the sensor.

    3

Remove the bolt that holds the sensor in place and replace the sensor. Tighten the bolt to 12 to 16 ft- lbs. of torque.

    4

Plug in the sensor and replace any clips you removed.

    5

Attach the wheel and lower the car.
