Volvo unveiled hybrid technology for heavy vehicles, which they expect to offer fuel savings of up to 35 percent. That figure is based on approximations in city driving iwth frequent breaking and accelerations.

I-SAM is the new system which makes up the start moter, drive engine and generator. It works with a converted mechanical transmission, an electronic control unit and a conventional diesel engine and batteries with regenerative breaking.

The electric and diesel engine will be linked in parallel. I-SAM will provide sufficient power to start and accelerate heavy vehicles to speed without the diesel engine kicking in. The new engine is expected to cut down on noise pollution, as well.
