Jaguar and Land Rover are moving to sell hybrid models within the next five years. The new hybrid models will use their next generation engines, a 3.0-litre V6 diesel and a direct-injection 5.0-litre V8, to be launched late next year.
Land Rover is thinking about starting with a 3.0 litre V6 diesel Range Rover Discovery 3, Ranger Rover Sport, Jaguar XF and Jaguar XJ; possibly going on sale by 2010. They expect to boost fuel economy by 10 percent utilizing start-stop technology.
They are also experimenting with a mild hybrid using a super capacitor that uses regenerative braking and an eight speed ZF gearbox. Again, the thought is the new vehicle could go on sale by 2010.
And another possibility being floated; Land Rover is considering ZF's Dynastart electric motor to replace the torque convertor, currently being outfitted for the S-Class mercedes. This one could be a mild or a full hybrid, available by 2012 in the XJ. Land Rover is looking at a rear-mounted 'Electric Rear Axle Drive' electric motor
And to top it all off, Land Rover is thinking about developing an 'range extended hybrid electric vehicle (REHEV). In other words, a plug-in hybrid.
