In 1989, Chevrolet Camaros slowly rolled up the hill from the horsepower mediocrity characteristic of the early and mid-1980s. Chevrolet offered the 1989 Camaro with four engine choices, ranging from a 135 horsepower V-6 to the 240 horsepower L98 V-8. Each engine was fuel injected, providing better fuel economy and performance than their carbureted predecessors. Many enthusiasts discovered slight performance improvements by switching to synthetic oil and replacing the exhaust with larger, 3-inch pipes. Regardless of performance and fuel economy levels, each engine uses a dipstick and dipstick tube to allow you to measure the level of oil in the crankcase.

Instructions

    1

Block off the left-rear wheel with two wheel chocks so that the Camaro cannot roll. Lift the front end with the floor jack. Station a jack stand under the front sub-frame on each side, then lower the Camaro onto the stands, using the floor jack.

    2

Open the Camaro's hood. Pull the dipstick out of the dipstick tube, wipe the oil from it, using a rag, and set it aside.

    3

Get down under the front end with the drain pan, box wrench, brake cleaner and some rags. Slide the drain pan under the dipstick tube, where the tube joins the engine. Unbolt the dipstick tube bracket from the side of the engine block, using the 1/2-inch box wrench.

    4

Pull the dipstick tube out of the engine. Make sure the dipstick tube O-ring comes off with the tube; if not, remove it from the dipstick mounting hole.

    5

Slide the new dipstick tube into the engine. Make sure the tube's raised portion is flush with the engine. Bolt the dipstick tube bracket to the engine, using the box wrench.

    6

Clean the area thoroughly with brake cleaner and rags. Climb out from under the Camaro with the tools and old dipstick tube. Remove the wheel chocks from the left-rear wheel.

    7

Reinstall the dipstick. Lower the Camaro off the jack stands, using the floor jack. Check the oil level and top off, as needed, with fresh engine oil.
