Honda introduced the Class 8 hybrid diesel electric truck as part of its truck fleet. The Smartway(SM)-certified* Model 386 hybrid truck was built by Peterbilt Motors Company and is expected to reduce their carbon emissions by 45 tons per year.
Honda uses the class 8 trucks to transport parts from its part centers and dealerships. Honda estimates the truck fleet travels 300,000 miles per day. The hybrid truck they purchased will be driving in Tennessee and Georgia.
The hybrid truck is a test bed, and will be evaluated and compared with a standard diesel truck using engine telematics to compare the trucks along the same routes. Honda expects the testing to last a year.
"We're excited to add this environmentally advanced truck to our fleet," said Jim Roach, senior vice president of Parts and Service for American Honda. "With our truck fleet driving hundreds of thousands of miles per day, we feel this is a great opportunity for Honda to further reduce its carbon footprint."
The Peterbilt hybrid truck uses a parallel diesel-electric hybrid system developed by Eaton. It employs regenerative braking to help recharge the battery pack. The electric motor is used to power the heating, air conditioning and vehicle electrical systems.
In addition, Honda will soon be adding a Peterbilt Class 7 medium duty hybrid truck at its parts centers in Irving, Texas, and Alpharetta, Ga.
