How to Check Solid Axle Ball Joints

Ball joints are one of the more important components of your vehicle's steering and suspension systems. Ball joints act as the connector between the wheels of your vehicle and the steering linkage. Solid axle ball joints are installed on the axle of your vehicle. Many vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Blazer, use solid axle ball joints. Ball joints are sturdy components, but they are prone to wear and tear. Over time, you may need to install new ball joints.

Lift your vehicle with a jack and support its front end with jack stands.

Remove the wheel nuts with a wheel wrench. Once the nuts are removed, pull off the wheels.

Locate the ball joints on the steering knuckle of your vehicle, next to the stabilizer bar. Make sure your vehicle is properly secured on the jack stands and pull down on the ball joints. They should not move at all. If they move even slightly, you may want to replace them.

Reattach the wheels and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack.
