The General Motors (GM) dimmer switch, model number 7827028 is a dimmer (or actuator) switch used in GM cars and trucks from 1971 to 2002, including the Suburban, Camaro and Silverado. The dimmer switch is located on the left hand side of the steering wheel, beneath the instrument panel. Replacement dimmer switches can be purchased at most auto parts stores. Installation time is approximately 30 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Pop the hood of your GM vehicle and prop it open with the hood prop.

    2

Use a wrench to loosen the GM's negative battery cable.

    3

Unscrew the screws holding the dimmer switch panel down with a screwdriver. Use the screwdriver to pull the panel, also known as a bezel, forward.

    4

Push the dimmer switch in from the front and then pull the switch free from the bezel. Unplug the old GM switch from the plastic wiring harness. Plug the new dimmer switch into the wiring harness. Slide the end of the new switch back into the bezel and then lay the bezel flat against the dash.

    5

Replace the panel screws with the screwdriver. Also replace the negative battery cable with the wrench. Test the new dimmer switch.
