The 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier's ABS warning lights (ABS, Service Vehicle, Trac Off) are designed to alert the driver to potential problems with the anti-lock braking system. When the ABS computer senses a problem, it illuminates these three lights and disables the anti-lock braking and traction control systems. In addition to temporarily disabling these systems, it stores a diagnostic trouble code, or DTC, in its internal memory. In order to turn off these lights, the DTC must be cleared from the ABS computers internal memory using an automotive scan tool with ABS capabilities.
Instructions
- 1
Stop the vehicle on a flat surface and shift the transmission into park (or first gear for a manual transmission). Turn the engine off and apply the parking brake.
2Turn the ignition to the ON position but do not start the engine. Locate the Cavalier's diagnostic data port. You can find it underneath the dashboard on the drivers side of the vehicle, just above the brake/gas pedal area.
3Connect the scan tools data cable to the vehicles diagnostic data port and power on the scan tool. Choose ABS from the scan tools main menu. Choose Read All Current and Stored DTCs from the ABS menu. Write down the code thats displayed on the screen; this can help you identify the problem that may have caused the light to turn on if it happens again.
4Navigate back to the Codes menu and select Clear All Current and Stored DTCs. Wait while the scan tool clears the code from the computers memory.
5Power down the scan tool and disconnect it from the vehicle. Start the engine and verify that the ABS lights are no longer illuminated.
