How to Hook Up a Rochester 2G

Carburetors are a fuel delivery system, designed to send the proper fuel and air mixture into an engine's combustion chamber to fire the pistons. The Rochester 2G is a simple, two-jet carburetor from a bygone era -- before emission standards. This 2G was often used in tandem with other 2Gs, such as Pontiac's Tri-Power setup during in the 1960s. Installing a Rochester 2G is much the same as any other carburetor. However, exact settings for the air-fuel mixture depend on the engine and the number of 2G carburetors used.

Instructions

    1

Clean the carburetor mounting surface. Before cleaning the gasket surface, put rags inside the intake manifold where the carburetor mounts, to prevent debris from entering the manifold. Using a gasket scraper, putty knife or emery paper -- in the case of aluminum intake manifolds -- remove any remaining pieces of the old gasket.

    2

Remove the rags from the intake manifold, being careful not to let any debris fall inside.

    3

Place the new gasket onto the carburetor manifold mount, and place the Rochester 2G on top of the gasket. Be sure to align the carburetor's mounting bolts with the gasket and intake manifold.

    4

Tighten the mounting bolts. Using a ratchet with an extension and the proper-size socket, tighten the Rochester 2G mounting bolts, being careful not to over-tighten them.

    5

Attach the throttle cable to the Rochester 2G. At the driver's-side base of the carburetor, attach the throttle cable to the linkage by tightening the screw holding the cable in place.

    6

Connect the fuel line. The fuel inlet is located at the top-front of the carburetor body, toward the passenger side of the engine. Two wrenches are necessary -- one to hold the carburetor-body fuel fitting and another to tighten the fuel line.

    7

Connect the choke vacuum line. On the passenger's side of the 2G body, slide the vacuum hose onto the nozzle located on the choke diaphragm assembly.

    8

Start the engine and adjust the fuel/air mixture to the desired ratio by turning the idle mixture screw. The Rochester 2G's idle mixture screw is located at the base of the carburetor body, where it mounts to the intake manifold. When the carburetor is properly adjusted, place the air-filter housing and filter on the top of the carburetor. Replace the filter assembly lid, and tighten the wing nut by hand.
