The 1995 Dodge Ram pickup has a threaded-on fan clutch with a 36 mm nut securing it to the threaded nose of the water pump pulley. Failure of the fan clutch is because of fluid leakage from the bushings or failure of the bushings themselves. A failure of the fan clutch will be evident in several ways. If the fan can be rocked back and forth, shows signs of leakage, has no resistance when spun with the engine off or does not engage fully when the engine is a normal temperature and spins slowly, it is indeed faulty.

Instructions

    1

Remove the radiator fan shroud bolts using a socket and ratchet. Remove the shroud. There is no need to remove the accessory belt. Place the large 36 mm wrench on the large nut securing the fan clutch to the water pump pulley and turn it counterclockwise to remove it. Once loose, remove the wrench and unthread the nut by hand.

    2

Lift the fan/clutch assembly out of the engine compartment. Remove the three bolts securing the fan clutch to the fan using a socket and ratchet.

    3

Thread the new fan clutch on the water pump pulley nose by turning it clockwise by hand. Be extremely careful making sure to align the nut perfectly to engage the threads so they don't strip. Once they are engaged, the fan can be spun clockwise to thread it on the remainder of the way. Tighten it with the 36 mm wrench.

    4

Install the radiator fan shroud using a socket and ratchet.
