Cavalier 1999 Drive Belt Removal

The Chevrolet Cavalier was introduced in 1982. The 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier was available with a 2.2- or 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder engine. The 2.2-liter engine produced 115-horsepower, while the 2.4-liter in the Z24 package produced 150-horsepower. The 1999 Cavalier was available in two-door, four-door and convertible trim levels. The belt on the 1999 Cavalier is responsible for rotating several major parts of the engine; among them, the water pump, power steering pump and alternator.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the Cavalier. Locate the "Belt Routing Diagram" on the passenger side just behind the headlight or under the hood. Draw your own belt-routing diagram if one does not exist. Draw a box on a piece of paper to represent the belt side of the engine. Draw each pulley that you see, in approximately the same position on the paper. Draw a thick line between the pulleys to represent the routing of the existing belt.

    2

Insert an open-end wrench onto the tensioner pulley. This is the pulley attached to the "teardrop" shaped aluminum housing. Rotate the tensioner to release the tension on the belt. Remove the belt from the pulleys.

    3

Install the belt according to the existing or drawn belt diagram. Make the front uppermost pulley your last stop in your routing. Rotate the tensioner assembly with the open-end wrench. Install the belt onto the final pulley.

    4

Inspect the belt on each pulley to make sure the belt is centered. If you need to make adjustments, compress the tensioner about halfway, then make your adjustments.
