Mazda Proteges built in late 1995 and after came equipped with automotive diagnostic systems. When a warning light illuminates on the dash of the Protege it means a malfunction has been detected and a problem code has been stored inside the computer. Generally the malfunction must be repaired and the code cleared before the warning light will go off. Each malfunction code has a designated number that allows the driver to know which component is in need of repair.
Instructions
- 1
Ensure that the ignition is off. Hook the automotive scanner to the diagnostic connection plug below the steering wheel.
2Turn the ignition key to the accessory position. Turn the scanner on and follow the on-screen instructions to locate the code. Once the code is flashing across the scanner screen, write down the code number in a notepad.
3Turn the ignition key back to the off position and open the vehicle repair manual to the "Engine Codes" section.
4Compare the code to the designated code number in the vehicle repair manual. The code number in the manual will be assigned to a designated component. This will be the component in need of repair or replacement.
