How to Change a 2005 Mazda6 Oil Filter

The 2005 Mazda 6 uses a paper filter in a housing under the car on the driver's side of the oil pan. Some aftermarket modifications have come available to convert this system to a cartridge filter. Mazda, however, does not recognize these modifications and will void the warranty should such modifications be present. The proper Mazda filter should always be used even though there are other paper filters that will fit. This is simply to preserve the warranty should it be needed.

Raise the front of the car using the floor jack, and place the jack stands under the sub-frame. Lower the car so it rests on the jack stands. Place the drain pan under the oil filter housing.

Remove the Allen screw in the base of the oil filter housing with an Allen wrench and allow the oil in the housing to drain. Install the Allen screw when it is finished draining. Remove the oil filter housing using a cup wrench by turning it counterclockwise. Lower the housing and lift the paper filter out of the housing. Discard the filter in an appropriate manner.

Remove the new filter and O-ring from its box. Install the new O-ring on the top of the filter housing. Install the paper filter. Fill the filter housing with oil to prevent the possibility of a dry start. The filter will only take about a half quart. The engine takes a total of 5 quarts with the filter.

Thread the filter housing on its bracket by turning it clockwise by hand as far as it will go. With the filter cup, tighten it to the point that it is snug. Do not over-tighten, or the housing will crack or be difficult to remove next time.

Raise the car and remove the jack stands. Lower the car. Remove the oil filler cap and fill the engine with the remainding 5 quarts of oil. Check the dip stick to make sure the level is correct. Replace the cap.
