How to Replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor on a 2001 KIA Rio

The Korean automaker Kia entered the U.S. marketplace in 1987, when it manufactured the Festiva for Ford. It was not until 1994 that the Kia name actually arrived in the U.S. with the introduction of the Kia Sephia. The Kia Rio first appeared in the 2001 model year, as the automakers subcompact economy car. The 2001 Rios 96-horsepower, 1.5-liter engine used a mass airflow sensor to determine the temperature and amount of air entering the engines intake manifold. Replacing the mass airflow sensorsensor on the 2001 Rio is a straightforward task, but Kia mounted the sensor out of view, though it is easily accessible.

Instructions

    1

Look just under the air filter box on the drivers side to find the mass airflow sensor. Press and hold the unlocking button on the mass airflow sensors wiring harness and unplug the harness from its receptacle.

    2

Loosen the hose clamps on both sides of the mass airflow sensor, using a flat-head screwdriver and pull the air hoses from the mass airflow sensor.

    3

Remove the mass airflow sensor-to-bracket bolts, using a ratchet and socket, and remove the mass airflow sensor.

    4

Guide the new mass airflow sensor into place and hand-thread its retaining bolts. Tighten the sensors bolts to between 69 and 96 inch-pounds with an inch-pound torque wrench.

    5

Press the two air hoses onto their respective ends of the mass airflow sensor and tighten the hose clamps with a flat-head screwdriver.
