How to Replace the Radiator on a 1997 GMC Safari Van

The radiator on a GMC Safari is designed to chill the engine coolant and transmission fluid using a series of aluminum fins. Over the course of driving, occasionally a rock can hit the radiator and damage it or cause it not to cool efficiently. Also, corrosion can build up from normal wear and tear, causing the radiator to lose effectiveness. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1997 GMC Safari, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Instructions

    1

Allow the engine to cool for three to five hours or until you can place your palm on top of the engine. Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and open up the petcock on the bottom to allow the coolant to drain out of the radiator.

    2

Unbolt the air filter using a flat head screwdriver and remove the upper fan shroud using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket then place it to the side. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses using the flat head screwdriver and pull them off of the radiator to let them drain into the pan.

    3

Unclip the transmission cooler lines using a flat head screwdriver to pop out the clip. Then pull off the clip and discard it. Unbolt the upper radiator mounts using the ratchet and lift the radiator out of the engine compartment.

    4

Place the replacement radiator in the engine compartment and bolt it in place using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reconnect the radiator hoses using the flat head screwdriver.

    5

Install the replacement clips onto the transmission lines then push them into the radiator until you can hear them clip into place. Reinstall the upper fan shroud and the intake tubing using the flat head screwdriver and the ratchet.

    6

Fill the radiator with the pre-diluted coolant. Then start the engine and turn the climate controls to the full heat setting. In 15 minutes, turn off the vehicle and allow it to cool for an hour. Then add more coolant as necessary.
