The water pump is the heart of the Toyota Corolla's cooling system, circulating the coolant. If the water pump breaks down, it can seriously affect your engine and cause damage. Make sure to change out a faulty water pump to keep your engine operating normally.

Instructions

1ZZ-FE Corolla Engine

    Disconnect the negative cable on the car battery before you begin.

    Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.

    Remove the right-hand engine under cover with the drive belt.

    Loosen and remove the bolts to the water pump and take the water pump out of the engine.

    5

    Install the new water pump. Tighten the short bolts to 80-inch lbs. (9 Nm) and tighten the long bolts to 96 inch pounds (11 Nm).

    Reinstall the drive belt and the right engine under cover.

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

    Refill the cooling system with coolant to the proper levels. Start the engine and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperatures.

    Remove the right-hand engine under cover and the drive belt.

    Loosen the bolts and remove the water pump pulley and the water pump.

    Equip the new water pump with a new o-ring and attach the water pump to the engine, tightening the bolts to 80 inch pounds (9 Nm).

    Reattach the water pump pulley, tightening the bolts to 11 foot pounds (15 Nm).

    Attach the drive belt and the right engine under cover.

    Reattach the negative battery cable. Refill the cooling system with coolant to the proper levels. Start the engine and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperatures.
