In listing the 60,000-mile service items for the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, General Motors notes that vehicles operated under extreme conditions have slightly modified schedules. Extreme conditions include the situation in which the vehicle is operated 50 percent of the time in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Vehicles operated for very short periods of time so the engine is never allowed to reach full operating temperature, taxi cabs, towing vehicles and police vehicles that idle extensively are also considered vehicles that operate under extreme conditions.

Instructions

    1

Change the timing belt. Change the oil and filter. For extreme conditions, change the oil every 3,000 miles. Check the transmission for operation by test driving and noting shift points and any slippage. Check the fluid color. If the fluid is brown, indicating excessive clutch material, change the oil and filter.

    2

Check the brake hoses and lines and replace any that are cracked or leaking. Check the coolant level and correct as necessary with DexCool only.

    3

Inspect and service the drive shaft boots and throttle linkage. Inspect and service the exhaust system as necessary.

    4

Lubricate the chassis, suspension, parking brake guides, throttle linkage, chassis mounting points, transaxle linkage and steering linkage. Rotate the tires.

    5

Replace the PCV -- positive crankcase ventilation -- valve filter and the air filter element. Inspect the spark plugs and replace as necessary. Inspect the spark plug wires. Inspect the EGR -- exhaust gas recirculation -- and the fuel injection system for operation, and repair as necessary. Inspect and replace the accessory drive belt as necessary.
